چکیده
The paradigm of immediate serial recall (Baddeley, 1986) has been used extensively in investigation of working memory, but its relation to and implications for the nature of phonological processing have seldom been examined. We show that findings from thisdomain can be interpreted in two ways, and relate these two interpretations to a simple model of phonological processing. One interpretation emphasizes the availability of information from “output” phonological processing to “input” phonological processing, while the alternative account stipulates no such connections. On the basis of an experimental study designed to choose between the two accounts, we tentatively conclude that the interpretation suggesting output-input connectivity is supported. Establishment of this result would be of considerable interest, since it indicates that processes in language production can impact directly on processes in language perception.

Expressive Aphasia: Reporting a Phonological Retrieval Hypothesis for Auditory Verbal Memory Deficits
The nature of the relationship between language, working memory and auditory-verbal memory seems to remain unclear and classical language and memory models appear to view these skills as completely separate modules. Language processing models consider the existence of devices or buffers which store linguistic information. Levelt [1] describes a short-term memory device called the articulatory b...
متن کاملMultiple Scansions in Loanword Phonology: Evidence from Cantonese
In loanword phonology we seek to uncover the processes by which speakers possessing one phonological system perceive, apply native representational constraints on, and ultimately produce forms which have been generated by a different phonological system. In other words, loanwords do not come equipped with their own phonological representation. For any phonetic string, it is only native speakers...
متن کاملConcreteness effects in different tasks: implications for models of short-term memory.
This study investigates concreteness effects in tasks requiring short-term retention. Concreteness effects were assessed in serial recall, matching span, order reconstruction, and free recall. Each task was carried out both in a control condition and under articulatory suppression. Our results show no dissociation between tasks that do and do not require spoken output. This argues against the r...
متن کاملPHONOLOGICAL TO ARTICULATORY CASCADE 1 Running Head: PHONOLOGICAL TO ARTICULATORY CASCADE Cascading Activation From Phonological Planning to Articulatory Processes: Evidence from Tongue Twisters
Research into spoken word production has often focused on the interaction of lexical selection processes and phonological planning. Less attention has been given to the relationship between phonological planning and articulatory processes. The current study considers evidence from the tongue twister paradigm to investigate such potential interactions. Acoustic analyses of various parameters of ...
متن کاملExploring dyslexics' phonological deficit I: lexical vs sub-lexical and input vs output processes.
We report a series of experiments designed to explore the locus of the phonological deficit in dyslexia. Phonological processing of dyslexic adults is compared to that of age- and IQ-matched controls. Dyslexics' impaired performance on tasks involving nonwords suggests that sub-lexical phonological representations are deficient. Contrasting nonword repetition vs auditory nonword discrimination ...
